Has culture taken over from climate as the biggest reason to visit Andalucía?

21/06/2017

It is no secret that people from across the world flock to Andalucía to experience the sun – it is certainly one of the biggest reasons to rent holiday apartments in Sotogrande. But are we entering an era in which it is actually the region’s legendarily varied culture, rather than its climate, that is the biggest draw for those both visiting temporarily and setting up home here?

That was a thought that crossed our mind as we examined several recent news stories showing the enthralling pace of change in this always-exciting and stimulating part of the world.

A host of fascinating cultural and historic sites

The first of those stories we noticed, in The Olive Press, concerned the declaration by Spain’s new Cultural Heritage and Museums chief, Jose Ramon Benitez, that monuments are now the main reason for people to visit Andalucía.

Despite the weather being regarded as the greatest attraction for the 10.6 million people who came to Andalucía last year, cultural tourism is now reported to account for 28.8% of all visitors to the region. Nor may that be massively surprising, given that the area has a wealth of historical and cultural treasures, including some 126 declared historic areas and various UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

However, there’s plenty more about the Andalusian cultural scene that is worth getting excited about at the moment. This includes the recent opening of a new art exhibition space at the Auditorio-Teatro Felipe on Calle Santo Tomas de Aquino in Estepona, as well as the town’s second festival of music and circus performances, which will take place in Estepona Children’s Park on 5th August. Adult tickets for the latter are priced at €20, and children’s tickets just €1.

However, you should never underestimate the Spanish weather

Did you know that an already scorching Spain is set to become even more so this year? That’s the prediction of the country’s state meteorological agency, AEMET, which has said that this summer will be even hotter than last year’s, when the average temperature of 24.2ºC made it the third hottest since 1965.

Clearly, then, Andalucía will continue to be a major draw for prospective visitors and home movers around the globe for both its culture and its climate – and we can’t see that changing any time soon!
